How to Protect Your Tattoo from Sun Damage This Summer

Why Sun Protection is Crucial for Your Tattoo

Summer is here, and for many of us, that means spending more time outside—whether it’s at the beach, on a hike, or enjoying a sunny afternoon with friends. But if you’ve recently gotten a tattoo, there’s one major concern you’ll want to pay attention to: protecting your tattoos (and future tattoo-able skin!) from sun damage.

Tattoos are a form of art, and just like any other art, they need to be cared for and protected to stay vibrant for years to come. Exposure to the sun’s harsh rays can cause your tattoo to fade and even damage the skin. If you want your tattoo to remain crisp, colorful, and beautiful, sun protection is a must.

In this blog, I’ll share some tips on how to keep your tattoo safe and looking fresh this summer while you soak up the sunshine.

Avoid Direct Sun Exposure for the First Few Weeks

When you first get a tattoo, your skin is essentially a wound that’s healing. In the early days, it's vital to keep your tattoo out of the sun as much as possible. Sun exposure on a fresh tattoo can lead to scabbing, increased irritation, and, in the worst cases, can lead to infection. It can also cause the tattoo to heal poorly, which can affect the final appearance of your tattoo.

During the first few weeks of the healing process, avoid direct sun exposure altogether. Stay in the shade or wear loose clothing to cover the area until your tattoo has fully healed. Once healed, you can take more liberties, but it's still important to be cautious.

Use a High SPF Sunscreen

Once your tattoo is healed, it’s still important to protect it from the sun. The UV rays from the sun can fade the colors of your tattoo over time, especially darker shades. To prevent your tattoo from losing its vibrancy, make sure to use a high SPF sunscreen whenever you're spending time outdoors.

Look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays, and make sure it’s at least SPF 30 or higher. Apply the sunscreen generously on your tattoo and reapply it every two hours or more often if you’re swimming or sweating. Don't skip this step—it’s the best way to keep your tattoo looking as bright as the day you got it!

Side note: My mom always told me that the reason she has such great skin is because she's been putting sunscreen on every day since she was in her teens! (I’m biased, but Momma Peachy still looks like she could be in her 30s!) That being said, sunscreen is important on all your skin, but especially for your tattoos!

Wear Protective Clothing

If you want to be extra cautious, wearing protective clothing can provide an added layer of defense for your tattoo. Opt for lightweight, breathable fabrics like cotton that cover your tattoo and shield it from the sun. Long sleeves, hats, and pants are great options for areas like your arms, legs, and torso. If you’re going to be out in the sun for an extended period of time, wearing protective clothing can help keep your tattoo shielded from direct UV exposure.

For tattoos on areas like your back, chest, or neck, consider wearing a wide-brimmed hat or a long-sleeved shirt if you're going to be outside for a while. Remember, keeping your tattoo out of the sun when you can is one of the easiest and most effective ways to ensure it stays vibrant.

Stay in the Shade When Possible

If you’re planning to be outdoors for a long period of time, make an effort to stay in the shade as much as possible. Whether you’re lounging by the pool, attending an outdoor event, or hiking, there’s usually an option to escape the direct sun. Find a shady spot under a tree, umbrella, or any structure that will block out the sun’s rays.

This will minimize the exposure of your tattoo to the harmful UV rays while still allowing you to enjoy your time outside. If you’re planning to be at the beach or pool, find a shaded lounge area or bring an umbrella with you.

Keep Your Tattoo Safe and Vibrant All Summer Long

Your tattoo is a unique piece of art that tells your story, and it’s worth protecting from the sun’s harmful effects. By following these simple tips—avoiding direct sun exposure while healing, using sunscreen, wearing protective clothing, and seeking out shade when possible—you’ll ensure that your tattoo stays fresh, vibrant, and beautiful for years to come.
